Imperial College London Rocketry is a team of undergraduate engineers learning about aerospace through the design, build and launch of rockets. With the desire to reach space one day, efficiency in both our process and our designs is critical. Follow us as we take you through our journey in preparation for the 2021 edition of the European Rocketry Challenge (EuRoC). EuRoC is an annual rocketry competition hosting university teams from all over Europe with the aim of building and launching rockets to reach a set altitude. Learn the basics of high-powered rocket design and see how we integrate Fusion 360 into our process. We’ll cover the many challenges we faced and the decisions we made throughout a gruelling week-long competition, and you’ll hear how the lessons we learned inform what we do now. Presented by current engineering students, you’ll see the impact of the experience on our personal and professional development, as well as our plans for this year’s edition of the competition.

Transportation projects involve a diverse set of stakeholders to review and approve a project before they can move forward to construction. Given today’s technologies, those stakeholders are influenced through many different mediums - drawings, BIM models, digital twins, and immersive environments. In this presentation, we will look at a transportation project from early conceptualization and preliminary design options through to the project review process. We will present alternatives to communicate, collaborate and convince stakeholder’s throughout the process by leveraging high resolution 3D and AI-derived planimetric data to conceptualize the project in an immersive MR environment using the Autodesk AEC Collection. The engineered roadway and line of sight will be delivered as a driveable experience for stakeholders to review the project before it’s built.

Including a ROI of 87 % by implementing Revit and Dynamo. Digitalization is the future of the building and MEP industry, with BIM technology evolving every year. Bravida is innovating by putting design in the center of stakeholder management and enriching it with multidimensional data such as time management, procurement, logistics, cost estimation, and work orders. These are modeled in Autodesk Forge via ACC Collaborate Pro along with 3D parametrical BIM that is empowered using multiple different authoring software within Autodesk AEC Collections. This session is good for any BIM enthusiast to see a good real life example of a mature yet humble, sophisticated yet easy way to develop a BIM platform.

This class will dive deep into the use cases for Autodesk Forge Data exchange and show how to export subsets of data from a Revit model. This data will then be joined with IoT data from typical building sensors and displayed in a web application built using the AWS Amplify service, which makes it easy to create a web app.

A case study from The Red Sea Development to share lessons learned from the design, manufacture and assembly of a large complex mass timber structure. In this session, we will demonstrate the best practices from the owner's perspective for defining the BIM requirements and processes to ensure the success of our OSM projects. Imagine 4 timber-framed, double curved, 100-foot span roofs, designed in London, manufactured in Switzerland, shipped to Jeddah, and assembled at a remote site. We'll share our experience of evaluating BIM formats, determining preferred solutions for the interoperability between Revit, Rhino & CadWork, to support the designers, timber manufacturing and contractors to deliver the luxury building. Our teams used BIM360 for the model collaboration for review of design and coordination issues and we learned how to leverage the tools and platform to solve complex challenges, improve our quality control processes and ultimately deliver the project on-site.

Trust is the foundation of every relationship. This applies in personal and professional situations, like building a building. The level of trust within a project team, between designers, contractors, and trades, can have a major impact on project outcomes. Do contract structures help or hinder? Do our software tools add or reduce trust? Have we built a culture of mistrust and litigation in a race to shed risk? In this discussion, professionals from different backgrounds will discuss project challenges that may be encountered, their effect on trust in the project team, and possible resolution methods. We’ll explore ways to build and repair trust, how better communication can help, and what strategies may be available to build trust. We’ll discuss positive impacts these can have, and how to be more proactive from the start, leading to better project execution. We’ll seek ways to better collaborate, despite different backgrounds, goals, and expectations, to ensure a successful project.

This session will discuss how BIM should fit into a company’s digital transformation strategy, drawing on the experiences and lessons learned from undertaking this exercise at multidisciplinary design consultancy Khatib & Alami (K&A). For K&A, BIM had been well-established across all types of building projects since 2011. In 2018, a further roadmap was developed to drive quality and consistency across all levels of the organization as part of the company’s digital transformation. This roadmap included: Assessing current staff; building a strong team of modelers, auditors, and developers to achieve an internal critical mass; implementing BIM across all four K&A design centers; and ensuring one consistent set of standards, in accordance with ISO 19650. BIM implementation has been a cornerstone of K&A’s digital transformation, and its success has established strong momentum across the wider program.

K&A's standardization and implementation of BIM has promoted staff based on merit and effectiveness, and is proud to be an equal opportunities employer – the success of women colleagues is highly visible across the company’s Digital Services activities: Three streams were designed in the BIM roadmap; two of the three streams created within the BIM unit (BIM for building and BIM for infrastructure) are led by ladies. BIM development stream has mixed genders with dominance of women, in term of effectiveness. Mrs Amira AlSaeed, our 40 under 40 awareded star is one of the computational designs heroes, While Mrs Vijaya Venkata is leading the BIM implementation in Bangalore office. The construction industry’s efficiency gains have nearly flatlined over the last 25 years. Why? The buildings industry remains one of the least digitized. These issues trickle into the operational stage of the lifecycle, where commercial buildings waste an average of 30% of their energy consumption. All told, operational costs and emissions are often 5 – 8x higher than capital costs. These inefficiencies and imbalances derive from misaligned incentives between builders and users.
